Japan in June
The Rainy Start of Summer
June marks the start of the rainy season in Japan, traditionally called tsuyu, meaning "plum rain." It is a period of frequent rainfall rather than constant rain, as wet weather moves gradually across the country. The season begins earlier in southern regions like Okinawa and later in northern areas such as Tohoku, while Hokkaido is mostly unaffected and remains relatively dry.
Know Before You Go
- The rainy season varies by region and timing across Japan.
- It does not rain every day, but showers are more frequent than usual.
- Indoor activities become popular, including museums, theaters, and restaurants.
- Northern Japan, especially Hokkaido, is the best option for avoiding heavy rain.
Nature in the Rainy Season
June plays an important role in Japan's natural cycle. Rice fields across rural areas are filled with water in preparation for cultivation, creating scenic landscapes. At the same time, seasonal fruits like plums ripen during this period.
One of the most beautiful sights of the season is the blooming of hydrangeas, which thrive in wet weather. A famous viewing spot is Meigetsu-in Temple, where hydrangeas reach peak bloom in mid-June.
Rainfall is lighter in Hokkaido but much heavier in southern regions such as Kyushu and Shikoku, making travel conditions vary greatly depending on location.
Indoor Arts and Entertainment
Rainy days are ideal for indoor cultural experiences. Traditional performances like kabuki can be enjoyed at Kabukiza Theatre, where both full and shorter performances are available.
Nearby, the area of Ueno offers several major museums and galleries, showcasing everything from classical art to natural history exhibits.
World of Aquariums
Japan is known for its advanced aquarium culture. One of the most famous is the Churaumi Aquarium, widely regarded as one of the best in the country.
In Tokyo, the Sunshine Aquarium offers a unique rooftop aquatic experience, while Aquamarine Fukushima is one of the largest aquariums in Japan and known for its modern design and recovery after the 2011 tsunami.
Major cities like Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Hiroshima also offer high-quality aquarium attractions.
Hokkaido: A Rain-Free Escape
Due to its mild weather during the rainy season, Hokkaido becomes especially attractive in June. The region hosts major seasonal events such as the Yosakoi Soran Festival, a vibrant dance parade held in early to mid-June.
Shortly after, the Hokkaido Shrine Festival takes place around June 14, celebrating local traditions.
June is also a great time to visit national parks and alpine areas, as many hiking routes open for the season. Remote islands like Rebun Island and nearby areas in the Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park are especially beautiful, with alpine flowers beginning to bloom.
