Oirase Gorge
Japan Tour Travel Guide
Stroll along the picturesque Oirase Gorge in Aomori Prefecture. Known for its crystal-clear streams, moss-covered rocks, and vibrant autumn foliage, this scenic 14-kilometer trail is a nature lover's dream and one of the most beautiful hiking paths in Japan. Flowing from Lake Towada, the Oirase Stream weaves through a pristine forest, creating dozens of photogenic waterfalls along the way.
Experience the Best of Oirase Gorge
Whether you are exploring nature, enjoying local cuisine, or learning about traditional culture, Oirase Gorge has something for everyone. This destination is highly recommended for travelers looking for an authentic Japanese experience surrounded by tranquil forests and rushing waters.
Hiking the Oirase Stream Trail
The hiking trail runs roughly parallel to the stream and the road, making it very accessible. Walking the entire 14 kilometers from Nenokuchi (at Lake Towada) to Yakeyama takes about 4 to 5 hours at a leisurely pace. The path is relatively flat and well-maintained, suitable for hikers of all ages and abilities.
Along the route, you will pass numerous named waterfalls, including the powerful Choshi Ootaki (the only waterfall on the main stream), the delicate Kumoi-no-Taki, and the multi-tiered Ashura Current, which is a favorite among photographers for its dramatic, rushing waters surrounded by lush moss and foliage.
Cycling
If you prefer not to walk, cycling is an excellent way to see the gorge. Rental bicycles are available at Nenokuchi, Yakeyama, and Ishigedo. The road gently slopes downwards from Nenokuchi to Yakeyama, so riding in that direction is mostly downhill and effortless. Electric assist bicycles are also available and highly recommended if you plan to make a round trip.
Lake Towada
At the upper end of the gorge lies Lake Towada, a stunning caldera lake known for its deep blue waters. Sightseeing boats operate on the lake, offering scenic cruises that provide a different perspective of the densely forested caldera walls. The area around Yasumiya features souvenir shops, local eateries serving freshly caught Himemasu (Kokanee salmon), and the Towada Shrine.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (Late October to Early November): This is the absolute peak season. The gorge transforms into a spectacular tunnel of vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. It gets extremely crowded, so arriving early in the morning is crucial.
Summer (June to August): The second most popular time to visit. The forest is a lush, deep green, and the cool air around the stream provides a refreshing escape from the intense Japanese summer heat.
Winter: While public transport is limited, winter offers a magical landscape of frozen waterfalls and snow-covered trees, accessible mainly through guided snowshoe tours.
Getting There & Around
The most convenient gateway to Oirase Gorge is via Aomori City, Hachinohe, or Shin-Aomori Station (all accessible by the Tohoku Shinkansen). JR Tohoku buses run frequently between these stations and the gorge, passing right alongside the trail. You can hop on and off the bus at various stops along the gorge if you only want to hike specific sections.
